CATEGORY: CITY HOTEL
LOCATION: THESSALONIKI
PROJECT DATE: 2020
At the commencement of the project, the building was an existing eight-storey reinforced concrete structure, originally designed to accommodate multi-storey residential apartments. The intervention involved a complete change of use, transforming the building into a five-star urban hotel comprising 27 guestrooms and junior suites.
The hotel is located in the historic center of Thessaloniki, on a pedestrian street. The building is constructed above a preserved section of the late-19th-century stone city walls of Thessaloniki, a listed archaeological monument. The footprint and trace of the historic wall were required to be retained and legible at ground-floor level. In response, the ground floor was designed with extended glazed surfaces that reveal the archaeological remains, which are accentuated through nocturnal illumination. This approach allows guests and visitors to engage directly with the city’s layered history. The presence of the historic fortifications is further referenced throughout the hotel interiors, where the city walls are reinterpreted through curated artistic interventions within the guestroom levels.
The architectural scope encompassed the design of both the building façades and the complete interior architecture, including the lobby, guestrooms, and bespoke lighting elements. All finishes, furnishings, and custom details were meticulously specified to establish a cohesive and warm spatial atmosphere. The project was realized through close collaboration between the architect and the client, ensuring a unified design vision across all scales.
